forged turbine blades

Have you ever looked at a gas turbine? These amazing machines drive jets, create electricity and help bring oil to the surface. Turbine bladesIn a gas turbine, an important aspect of it is the presence and use of turbine blades. These blades must turn at a very high speed to generate enough energy for the turbine to function properly.

They are not easy blades to make. In reality, it takes a lot of effort and special skills. The blades need to be very strong so that it can withstand the extreme heat and pressure conditions in a turbine. That is why the majority of wind turbine blades are made by forging. Forging is the heating of a metal until it burns and then manipulated with hammer or mechanical press.

A critical component of gas turbines

The press uses these die shapes to form the steel into a blade. The dies are basically large molds to shape the metal properly. The shape of the dies and how wide they are will depend on what kind of blade it is. The real shape of the blade is created from when metal gets pushed or hammered in to die where it will have a very specific design.

The forged version is stronger since, during forging, the metal gets compressed and hammered to its shape. This causes the metal to be denser and more resistant; Blades made from cast, on the other hand, can harbor minute air pockets. The more air pockets there are in the blade, the weaker it becomes which eventually lead to break or crack under load.
