turbine blades in jet engines

Ever been thinking why the airplanes can fly so fast? The turbine blades, the component responsible for allowing a jet engine to go so fast! The max blades of these rotor are actually small spinning wings which convert the passing air into power. By doing so, this energy causes the plane to move forward and be high in the sky. Planes would travel slower and not as far without the turbine blades. But they are absolutely critical to getting airplanes to fly and be airworthy.

Jet engine turbine blades are built for strength as well as smoothness. They tend to be very durable because they require withstanding extreme heat and pressure while the engine is running. Nearly all turbine blades are made out of a special type of metal that is strong enough to hold up in these temperatures. Their blades are also engineered with protective coatings to prevent them from heating up as they cut.

The design of turbine blades in modern jet engines

The blades are plated in a circle about the turbine. All the blades are slightly angled (a lot!) which is key. These blades are designed so that when the air rushes past them, it pushes on the backwards and forces it to rotate. That spinning motion is how the energy necessary to run on leveraging this working of an engine. Without this rotation, the engine would not be able to produce a power capable of getting the aircraft off the ground.

Some of the fastest airplanes in the world rely heavily on turbine blades. A military jet, the F-22 Raptor can fly at a speed exceeding two times that of sound due to its specialized turbine blades as an example. The Concorde, which was a famous passenger jet that could travel at speeds greater than sound also used turbine blades to enable it fly faster! One of the things that makes these beauties so special is their ability to fly at those incredible speeds.
